Hello Captain Josh,

My grandchildren and I were on board for the critter cruise on 8/20/09. I think that it has to be the best on water experience for young kids in the world. The crew was extremely patient especially the young marine biologists with my grandson Tommy who was very apprehensive about touching anything that moved too fast. The crew answered all of the questions with alot of confidence and enthusiasm. They were also very helpful with the bait and a stubborn fish pole. The length of the cruise and the variety of activities was perfect. As a former marine biology teacher, I realized that I could not have designed a better program myself. Keep up the good work!

Happy Spring!
We are back in action and ready for another great season here at Monomoy Charters. The black sea bass and mackerel are biting so that's a good sign of things to come. We had a busy winter sprucing up our boat to make your trips more comfortable and we redesigned our website to bring more info to our customers - click here to check it out.

Great White Shark on Nantucket
Town shellfish biologist Jeff Mercer inspects a shark that washed up on a beach off Sheep Pond Road Monday.

Martha's Vineyard may have shark sightings, but Nantucket now has the real thing.

A seven-foot shark washed up on a beach off Sheep Pond Road Monday, and Marine Department officials believe it is either a young great white shark or a mako shark.

Representatives from the Division of Marine Fisheries will travel to Nantucket Tuesday to inspect it and attempt to identify the shark.

"It could well be a white shark, but we're not going to confirm what it is until we take a look tomorrow," said Lisa Capone, a spokesperson for the Division of Marine Fisheries.

After being discovered by several children on the beach, DPW workers along with an ATV police officer towed the shark off the sand and into a front-end loader parked on Sheep Pond Road.

Lifeguards and ATV police officers pulled swimmers out of the water at beaches along the south shore earlier on Monday after beachgoers reported seeing a shark in the water, beach manager Jeff Carlson said. A similar shark sighting was reported near Miacomet beach on Sunday afternoon.

A great white shark sighting on Martha's Vineyard last week proved to be a hoax, and a 60-year-old Boston man was charged with disturbing the peace for allegedly concocting the story.

The first Critter Cruise went out this morning and it was a GREAT TIME for kids and adults alike! The kids pulled pots filled with lobsters, spider crabs, conch, hermit crabs, and a variety of other creatures. Everyone had a chance to touch and learn about the creatures in our "touch tank" on board. After that, we did a little bottom fishing and everyone caught at least one scup! All of the kids went home with Critter Cruise tees and according to our sources it was a memorable day for everyone!Thank you to all of our first time "Critter Cruisers" - Emma, Natasha, Luke, Sophie, and Liam!

Striped Bass Recipe

We always encourage our customers to take home their catch and enjoy it as a family. Here is a great recipe from Cooking Light. Keep in mind that 1 nice-sized striper is enough to feed a very large group so when you are out on your trip, keep only what you need and leave the rest for next year! Bon Appetit!

Asian Marinated Striped Bass
2 tablespoons minced fresh cilantro
1 tablespoon sugar
3 tablespoons fish sauce
2 garlic cloves, minced
4 (6-ounce) striped bass fillets
Cooking spray

Combine first 4 ingredients in a large zip-top plastic bag; add fish to bag. Seal and marinate in refrigerator 20 minutes, turning once. Remove fish from bag, and reserve marinade.

Heat a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat. Add fish to pan; cook 4 minutes on each side or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Remove fish from pan. Add marinade to pan; bring to a boil. Cook 30 seconds; serve with fish.

Yield: 4 servings (serving size: 1 fillet and about 2 teaspoons sauce)

Angler of the Day - Ryan from Virginia

Ryan from Virginia crushed it today on our morning trip! He caught his first bluefish before we even left the harbor between the marina and Brant Point Lighthouse. Ryan continued his streak by landing 3 more bluefish off Coatue! As if that wasn’t enough, he continued to show off his angling skills by decimating the wreck – caught a double-header scup to start off and eventually landed this nice black sea bass. Way to go Ryan!!!

Fishing Report

Bottom fishing was red hot yesterday! We took a family of 28 out and while the bluefish were there, they weren't hungry. The wreck, however, was teaming with sea bass. We even reeled in a few exotics like this sea robin and a sand shark.

Sankaty is on fire with top water bass and blues! Bluefish up to 10 lbs and stripers up to 30 lbs. Don't be fooled by the amount of blues you see, there are stripers mixed in ... you just have to keep casting. The North shore is alive with bluefish, too from 40th Pole to the West Jetty.

Black Sea Bass on Nantucket

When many anglers hear someone mention "bass," they often think stripers or fresh water black bass. But, here on Nantucket, we also catch black sea bass. They are surprisingly great fighters and fantastic to eat. Long known by commercial fishermen as "rock bass," this species also carries the somewhat endearing name of "old humpback," due to the enlarged area above the head that is characteristic of many old males.

Black sea bass are best caught from May through summer in and around underwater structures (wrecks, jetties, and piers). The black sea bass is predominantly a bottom-feeder, although it will occasionally strike at plugs, jigs, or lures. The most commonly caught fish weigh from ½ to 2 pounds.

The firm, white flesh of this species is a favorite of many. In restaurants, black sea bass are often called "squirrel fish," and Chinese restaurants will serve delicious whole deep-fried bass as "Hunan fish." My wife and I coat the filets in a crumb mixture of crushed saltines and almonds and fry them in butter – EXCELLENT.

But, remember, with any species, take home only what you are going to eat – toss the others back so you can catch them next time!

Great Point is closed but we are OPEN!

Bad news for surfcasters for the next month.
Late Friday afternoon, Trustees of Reservations Property Superintendent Steve Nicolle closed Great Point from the southern end of the Galls northward to the point. Nicolle closed the beach not because of piping plovers chicks hatching, but because of a large tern colony with 100 nesting pairs. He expects the closure to last around a month. The outside of Coatue is still accessible from the southern end of the Galls.

Both the temperature and the fishing are hot on the island today!

Temperatures across Nantucket are expected to near 90 degrees today with the mercury already hovering around 80 at 10:45 a.m.

The National Weather Service was reporting the temperature at 80 degrees at 10:45 a.m., with unofficial reports topping out above 85. The NWS is forcasting a high for the day of at least 85.

The record high for June 9 is 84, set in 1959.

More importantly, FISHING ... fishing was fantastic this morning a few miles north of Nantucket Harbor. Got into some great bluefish top water this morning - most fish about 6 lbs. We were able to pick up one striped bass for dinner just inside the harbor.

June 8, 2008 - Nantucket Fishing Report

Fishing is awesome! The north shore is teaming with blues in great numbers and size. The stripers are HERE! Moving in and already thick under Sankaty Light (along with the blues). In the next week to 10 days, the stripers will be settling in for the season. Great Point is looking good and fishing is great despite all the seals. Fun to look at but not always the best for fishing. If you're on island now or coming in the next week or so, this is some of the best fishing Nantucket's gonna see all summer so give us a call! It's a great way to beat the heat.
